Credit Repair Organizations Act Information
General consumer information about federal protections that may apply to credit-related services.
Federal protections
The Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA), 15 U.S.C. §§ 1679–1679j, imposes duties on covered credit repair organizations, including restrictions on misleading representations, advance payments, and requirements for disclosures and contracts.
Consumer rights
Where CROA applies, consumers generally have statutory rights including a written contract and a three-business-day right to cancel without penalty. Any separately advertised cancellation period does not replace statutory rights.
No compliance certification
Educational positioning does not, by itself, establish exemption from CROA or other laws. The applicability of federal and state rules depends on actual services, representations, and business practices.
